Home made Familiar Block People

Most of your children will have some small plastic or wood people and animal toys that your children can build their own scene's and make up stories with. This idea shows you how you can create your own toys that are sure to inspire your children to play in a whole new way!

Imagine how your child's play would be inspired by having the opportunity to play with mini Mum, Dad, Nana, Brother Sister, Pets and themselves!!

You'll Need

1. Some pictures- Print off some photos, include family members, friends, granparents, pets. You could also get images from clipart like, trees, signs, other people and animals.
If taking photos specifically for this, strike different poses. It will make them extra fun to play with!

2. Something to hold the pictures. I've used old film containers that I've kept for years. You could also use some of your blocks to attach the pictures to.

3. If you have access to a laminator I'd recommend laminating your images to make them last longer.

4. Sticky tape

Ready to play!

Simply cut out your images, laminate and sticky tape to your containers!
Fill your containers with rice or sand to make them more sturdy.

I added new photos of Miss M as she got older!

I added a tree and a stop sign.
I plan to add more but will ask Miss M what she thinks we may need depending on what direction her play takes on.

I added 'us' to our blocks but you dont neccessarily have to play with these with blocks. They are great fun just as they are. You can add other household items as props for telling stories with your people. The opportunities are endless!

It was so insightful witnessing Miss M play with mini 'us'!
It was joyous to watch.
Nana and Poppy were always together, "Nana and Poppy are best friends"!
She also wanted me to play with her... for today.
I can see already that these are going to be very well played with!

EXTRA FOR TEACHERS: When I teach K, PP, 1 I always make a class set of these, one of each of my students and I add them to the block corner. Not only does it create new ways for children to play, it can also be a very helpful insight into friendships and the social skills of your students.

I hope you enjoy this one,

Play and Learn,

  4. I think this is a wonderful idea. Sometimes my daughter comes home from a sleepover at her grandparents' houses and doesn't even know where to begin telling me what she got up too.

Blocks would be a great way for her to re-create the sleepover.

I'm sure there are lots of other open-ended uses for the blocks too.

  6. Love this idea. So adorable. I'll have to make some of our own as well because I know my daughter would LOVE playing with all the family members! I like the idea in the classroom too.. role play is so useful in solving so many conflicts and issues and practicing responses etc.. it really would be a fabulous learning tool!
